This report presents the current knowledge about human behaviour in highly and fully automated vehicles and the psychological processes that influence task execution before, during and immediately after transition of control. The report also contains suggestions for further research and recommendations for policymakers. The dominant paradigm is the human factors paradigm.
The rationale for conducting a laboratory experiment was to control for as many confounding factors as possible without exposing participants to dangers in real traffic. As such, the results are an indication of the possible effects of transition of control on situation awareness in real traffic.
Various policy instruments have been tested in the model. The model outcome shows that if knowledge sharing and collaborative projects in the industry are stimulated and a public and private technology fund is created the technology development will grow faster. These policy instruments together lead to a market introduction of highly and fully automated vehicles between 2025 and 2030.
